Budaya sound system merupakan produk dari kombinasi faktor-faktor sosial yang khas Jamaika. Di negara yang penduduknya sebagian besar berpenghasilan rendah ini, orang kemungkinan besar tidak punya uang untuk membeli dan memainkan piringan hitam di rumah. Namun seperti orang di negara-negara lainnya, mereka ingin bersenang-senang bersama orang lainnya dan menari.[2]
Konsep sound system pertama kali menjadi populer pada tahun 1950-an di kawasan kumuh kota Kingston. Para DJ memuati sebuah truk dengan genset, meja putar, berikut sejumlah pengeras suara berukuran besar, dan lalu mengadakan pesta di jalanan atau tempat terbuka.
Deejay yang berperan sebagai selector memilih dan memainkan rekaman piringan hitam yang memiliki bass menonjol, memanipulasi kontrol volume dan tone atau menambah efek suara khusus seperti echo dan reverb untuk membuatnya dramatis.[2] Deejay lainnya memegang mikropon, dan berada di atas panggung atau di tengah para penari, serta mencoba berdialog dengan kerumunan orang, sambil menyanyikan lirik dan umumnya membuat musik dari piringan hitam menjadi lebih hidup.[2]
Pada awalnya para DJ memainkan musik rhythm and blues asal Amerika Serikat, namun seiiring perjalanan waktu, makin banyak pula musik lokal yang diciptakan hingga akhirnya musik yang mereka mainkan berubah menjadi musik lokal.[1]
Pesta-pesta yang mengundang sound system adalah bisnis besar, dan merupakan salah satu cara ampuh untuk mencari uang di tengah ketidakstabilan ekonomi. Penyelenggara pesta (DJ) mendapat uang dari "tiket masuk" dan keuntungan penjualan makanan serta minuman keras. Pesta musik sound system dapat pula dihadiri hingga ribuan orang.
Pada pertengahan 1950-an, sound system telah menggantikan peran band dan pemusik hidup dalam pesta-pesta. Pada paruh kedua 1950-an, sistem tata suara yang dibuat secara khusus mulai bermunculan dari bengkel-bengkel spesialis tata suara, misalnya Headley Jones yang membuat kotak pengeras suara seukuran lemari pakaian yang disebutnya "House[s] of Joy". Sekitar masa itu pula, DJ sekaligus MC bernama Count Machuki (nama asli: Winston Cooper) mencuat ke permukaan sebagai superstar.

Kepopuleran sound system terutama didasari oleh satu keinginan, yakni memiliki musik baru. Dalam usahanya menghindari rekaman yang dihasilkan label rekaman Amerika, dua superstar sound system, Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd dan Duke Reid beralih ke memproduksi musik sendiri. Pada awalnya mereka memproduksi singel-singel hanya untuk keperluan sound system masing-masing. Singel tersebut dikenal sebagai "exclusives" atau dubplate karena hanya ada satu kopi untuk satu lagu.[4]
Usaha meniru suara R&B dari Amerika Serikat berkembang menjadi genre musik baru dan unik Jamaika yang disebut ska. Pergeseran ini sebagian disebabkan oleh R&B gaya Amerika yang sebagian besar digemari oleh pendengar remaja berkulit putih, dan kemudian berkembang menjadi rock and roll. Oleh karena itu, pemilik sound system tidak dapat lagi mengandalkan pasokan lagu dari singel-singel Amerika seperti yang mereka ingini, yakni lagu-lagu boogie berirama cepat dan balada.

Sejarah
Pada awalnya TOA Corp didirikan oleh Mr. Tsunetaro Nakatani pada tahun 1934 dengan nama TOA Electronic Manufacturing Company. Pada saat itu TOA sudah dapat memproduksi pengeras suara dan
microfon. Pada tahun 1945 pabrik TOA hancur akibat serangan udara, tetapi pada tahun berikutnya TOA indonesiapindah ke kota Tokushima dan pada tahun 1947 kembali lagi ke kota Kobe yang kembali beroperasi dalam sebuah ruangan di dalam Rumah Sakit Kobe. Pada tanggal 20 April 1949 perusahaan TOA berganti nama menjadi TOA Corporation sampai sekarang, dengan bermodalkan Y500.000 dan 12 pekerja, Nakatani membangun ulang perusahaannya. Pada tahun 1954, untuk pertama kalinya di dunia, TOA memproduksi megafon elektrik yang ternama sampai sekarang. Setelah itu peralatan buatan TOA banyak di pakai di Jepang, seperti pada Olimpiade di Jepang, peralatan TOA di pakai di 31 lokasi olimpiade berlangsung. Pada tahun-tahun berikutnya TOA kembali berinovasi dengan banyak memproduksi peralatan-peralatan teknologi komunikasi, seperti wireless amplifier, mikrofon, speaker, dsb. Mulai pada tahun 1973-an perusahaan TOA melebarkan sayapnya ke mancanegara, seperti Jerman, Amerika Serikat, Inggris, Afrika Selatan, Taiwan, Kanada, dan juga Indonesia.
